The Laughing Policeman (Drama)

Villon’s Wife is a beautiful portrayal of the strength and perseverance of Japanese women in the difficult circumstances of post-war society.

BALLAD (Drama)

1574 – Power Struggles in Feudal Japan

There once lived a samurai in the small kingdom of Kasuga that was untouchable in battle. His name was Matabei Ijiri (Tsuyoshi Kusanagi).  The fearsome “Demon Ijiri” pledged his life to protecting the kingdom and its beautiful princess Ren (Yui Aragaki).  Despite deep feelings for one another, the princess and the warrior could never transcend their respective roles as master and subject.

Then one day, the untouchable Matabei has a close call. In the very instant an enemy foot soldier’s bullet would have brought Matabei down, a miracle occurs. A young boy appears out of nowhere and gives the foot soldier a start, throwing him off target and saving Matabei’s life. The boy’s name is Shinichi Kawakami (Sho Takei) and he claims to have slipped back in time from the future. The incredulous Matabei decides to take the boy back to Kasuga Castle to ask his Lord Yasuzuna (Atsuo Nakamura) how to deal with him. At the castle, Shinichi meets Lord Yasuzuna and Princess Ren, and much to his surprise, he recognizes Ren from a recurring dream from the future. When Princess Ren hears of Shinichi’s prophetic dream, she orders Matabei to look after him. Although reluctant at first, Matabei slowly opens up to the earnest Shinichi, and the two begin to form an unlikely friendship.

Then one day, Lord Takatora Okurai (Takao Osawa) pays a visit to Kasuga Castle, asking for the beautiful Princess Ren’s hand in marriage. It’s an opportunity for the small kingdom of Kasuga to ally itself with the powerful Takatora and ensure its own safety. Despite their love for each other, Princess Ren and Matabei must bury their feelings and acquiesce to the political marriage.

Raise The Castle! (Drama)

In Sanage, a small town of rural Japan, two factions are at a stand-off: rebuilding an ancient castle to attract tourists, or constructing a large factory to create jobs. In midst of this quarrel, the spirits of three samurai, take over the bodies of the unfortunate stodgy civil servant Ishizaki, the carpenter Kansuke and the homeless Gon. They call themselves Ondaiji Hayatonosuke, Kantessai and Gontaifu. Ondaiji, claiming to be the lord who once ruled Sanage over 400 years ago, order the townspeople to “raise a castle”, an attempt he could not realize back in his time.

With the help from a local history professor, Iwate, and an architecture student, Natsuki who also is the daughter of Kansuke, the somewhat perplexed townspeople come together to build this castle, to everyone’s surprise, from a material that is available, cardboard…

Meanwhile the Mayor of Sanage, an advocate for constructing a factory in the castle building site, has plans to destroy this frenzy of castle making. With the castle near completion, the medieval lord and modern mayor face off.

What will happen to the castle and its townspeople!?

The TV drama follows this devoted teacher trying to reform a team of misfit youths, charting their spiritual growth as this uncoordinated group of problem teens claws its way forward.  

The movie finds the 2nd-year players now in their final year, with newcomers joining the team. Overcoming problems with the new players, and an injury to their captain, with Mr Kawato they move into the semifinal tournament that leads to their final chance at a national championship. Will the dreams of the Futakotamagawa baseball team come true? Meanwhile, graduation day draws near.

The Vulture (Drama)

A Tale of Mari and Three Puppies (Family Drama)

Inspired by a true account of canine heroism, A Tale of Mari and Three Puppies is a touching story of love and resilience, which became a symbol of hope for the people of Yamakoshi in the aftermath of the devastating earthquake of 2004. 

In the village of Yamakoshi, a dog named Mari gives birth to three puppies, much to the joy of its owners Ryota (Ryohei Hirota) and Aya (Mao Sasaki).

A major earthquake hits the area and entire sections of the village are reduced to rubble. Away from home, Ryota and his father Yuichi (Eiichiro Funakoshi) are spared from injury, however Aya and grandfather Yuzo (Ken Utsui) are trapped in their collapsed house. As the two drift in and out of consciousness, the silence is broken by Mari who desperately tries to pull her owners from the rubble.

A rescue team eventually arrives at the scene, however Mari and her puppies are left behind. Without food or shelter, she desperately tries to protect her offspring from danger in the now deserted village…

Flowers in the Shadow (Drama)

Heida Kawada (Tsuyoshi Kusanagi) returns to his home town of Aso where a strange phenomenon seems to be taking place. As Heida puzzles over the bizarre occurrences, he meets Aoi (Yuko Takeuchi), a previous girlfriend whom he still loves. Aoi’s feelings for Heita appear to have long gone and she now struggles with the death of her boyfriend. As loved ones continue to return, she too wishes that this miracle may be bestowed upon her … and Heida must watch from afar.

Tsubaki Sanjuro 2007 (Drama)

In a remake of Akira Kurosawa’s 1962 classic Sanjuro, a group of idealistic young men, determined to clean up corruption, are aided by a scruffy, cynical samurai who does not fit their concept of a noble warrior.

Eighteenth century Japan. Weary of corruption, nine young revolutionary samurai send a document to the Chief Retainer, Mutsuda (Makoto Fujita), detailing their plan to clean up the wrongdoing of the clan. Mutsuda, uncle of Isaka (Ken'ichi Matsuyama), one of the idealistic young men, immediately dismisses the claim, tearing up the document before their eyes.

Disappointed, Isaka solicits the aid of Chief Inspector Kukui (Tokuma Nishioka) who meets with the youngsters. But Kikui proves not to be their saviour but a most dreadful enemy and quickly orders his troops to surround the building. Overhearing the conversation is Sanjuro (Yuji Oda) – an unkempt samurai who takes on the soldiers whilst the young men escape.

With a deep commitment to justice and honour, Sanjuro joins the rebellious group in their quest to overthrow the ruling elite. But just as they make plans, the Chief Retainer is kidnapped and it is Sanjuro who must face off with a ferocious enemy.

Closed Note (Drama)

While training to be a teacher, university student Kae (Erika Sawajiri) finds an old diary left in her home by a previous tenant.  However, between her studies, mandolin practice and a part time job at a local fountain pen store, she’s so busy that the unusual find slips her mind.

Whilst working in the shop, Kae meets a handsome illustrator, Mr Itoshibi (Yusuke Iseya) and her admiration for him quickly turns to love. Rediscovering the forgotten diary, Kae leafs through the worn pages to find a single photograph  - the diary’s author, Ibuki Sensai (Yuko Takeuchi) surrounded by her class of elementary students. Dreaming of becoming a teacher herself, Kae cannot help but read the personal words of this stranger.

As her romance with Mr Ishitobi develops, her life curiously begins to fall into sync with that of Ibuki’s …. but fate has in store a bitter-sweet truth indeed…

Trainman (Romantic Comedy)

Premiering in Japan on June 4, Trainman landed No. 1 at the box office grossing over JPY280,000,000 in its first weekend!  The film continues its strong performance in its sixth week of release.

Based on a story borne on the internet, and later adapted into manga by four competing magazines, it tells the story of 22 year old Otaku.   Travelling home after a hard days work, he rescues “Miss Hermes” from an annoying drunk on a train.   Smitten by her good looks, he decides this is the girl for him.  But how do you get the girl?  He’s not smart, he’s not good looking and he has no experience of dating!
