Selected to close the recent 60th Berlin International Film Festival, About Her Brother is veteran director Yoji Yamada’s homage to Kon Ichikawa’s 1960 release, and centres on the turbulent relationships within a middle class family.
In a residential neighbourhood of Tokyo, recently widowed Ginko (Sayuri Yoshinaga) runs a small pharmacy with help from her daughter Koharu (Yu Aoi) and mother in law (Haruko Kato).
On her wedding day, Koharu’s wayward brother Tetsuro (Tsurube Shofukutei) unexpectedly shows up. Considered black sheep of the family, he’s an unsuccessful comedy actor with a reputation of getting into trouble. After downing large quantities of alcohol, his behaviour descends into drunken mayhem breaking up the decorum of the wedding party. Duly sent back to Toyko, Tetsuro leaves the family reputation in tatters.
For Kohura, wedded bliss is short lived and when the marriage hits the rocks, she returns to live with her mother. Soon after, Tetsuro’s girlfriend Himoti (Midoriko Kimura) show’s up, requesting Ginko to cover the rebellious Tetsuro’s gambling debt.
Eventually ostracised by the family, Tetsuro’s name is barely mentioned – until Koharu receives a phone call asking her to travel to Osaka....

Fast forward to 2009. With goblins reappearing and disrupting fragile peace, the monks are called out of retirement to restore harmony.
